This piece is a part of a Forest of Memory theme in Winter's Gift, about getting lost in memories of the past, and finding a way to see the path beyond.
This photo was taken at Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, in Georgia. The locations for photos were amazing, however the beach was not swimmable at all.
I wanted to shoot early, and my husband went along to keep me company. We came across an Alligator on the trail to the beach, but had no trouble passing it despite the surprise in the darkness. My husband was kind enough to hold an umbrella in the intermittent rain while I shot images, getting soaked himself.
This image was taken during the blue light that only comes pre-dawn. The colored image required no adjustment to be breathtaking, so the choice to remove the color for this was difficult, but I felt that removing it forces recognition of light, and shadow. Much like my time in Architecture school, and the constant rejection of color to force us to view form and function. Color "tints" the world in so many ways, affecting not just visual aesthetics, but memory, associations, and attention.
The texture derived through the process of transferring the photo leaves holes in the image much like the pieces of the memory that degrade over time. The wash of paint creates a mist like the rain and clouds on that day. The highlights of glossy silver waves and ripples on the puddles on the beach reflect the light of the room, again tinting the memory with the colors of our surroundings.
I've hidden photos of both of my cats in this image.
