In my home, I live in what some would call a cave. Our whole home is essentially a single room. The floor level sits four feet below the ground outside, and the single window is seven feet from the floor over our living room. There is a time during the day where the sun streams in directly through the window, somewhere between 3 PM and 5 PM. I keep sun catchers in the window left to me by my mother who passed when I was only 21. They remind me of her every time they cast rainbows, each prismatic echo a promise of warmth and care, albeit self care now that I’m older. This time of day is a time of rest whenever I can take it. Letting my mind, body, and spirit be still for just a little while. My cats also enjoy this time with me, basking in the sun, following the rays as they trace across the living room.
I found the word “apricity” when looking for a word that meant what I felt when making this video: warmth, sun, peace. The meaning of the word is “the warmth of the sun in winter.” It was a perfect expression of the feeling I wanted to convey, contrasting the warmth of the light of life giving sun against the chill of the cold of winter in time of darkness. It embraces you, fills you, nourishes you and brings you peace.
